Sheet Savers - Sheet savers are waterproof pads you put on top of the fitted sheet on the crib mattress. When your baby spits up or has a leaky diaper during the night, you can supposedly change the sheet saver instead of the entire fitted crib sheet. When I heard of them, I thought it was such a good idea that I went out a bought a whole bunch. The first night my baby came home from the hospital, I put him in the crib on top of the sheet saver thinking he would stay right there. Little did I know that even newborn babies can move all over their cribs and get some distance with their spit-up. Needless to say, the sheet savers never saved my crib sheets from anything.
Cribs. Strollers. Onesies. Bacteria-trapping bottle valves? Baby gear may not seem like a dynamic technology sector, but each year engineers, scientists, doctors, and designers introduce gadgets that aim to make caring for newborns and infants safer, more efficient, and less messy. Often, the creators are first-time parents who grow frustrated with existing gear and invent their own solutions.
Nice Big Bibs - Why buy them before starting solids? They protect baby’s clothes from drool. (Babies have a lot of drool especially when they’re teething.) For older babies starting solid food, they’re even more necessary. Hooded Towels - These keep your baby’s head warm after a bath, but it’s also about the photo opportunities. Hello duck towel. Baby Soap and Shampoo - Although adult products can be too harsh to use on babies, it’s possible to get baby pretty clean using just water and a washcloth. Baby Safe Laundry Detergent - It’s nice to have this for babies with sensitive skin.
Pacifier - Before I actually had a baby to take care of, I always thought I wouldn’t let my child have a pacifier. However, when my son was three days old, I remember crying, "Where’s a pacifier?!" My belief about pacifiers was forever changed. For the next several months, I was highly reliant on the pacifier to calm my son during the difficult transition from womb to world. Plus, he broke his pacifier habit on his own once he discovered his thumb.
